How I Lost Weight and Gained Muscle

How I Lost Weight and Gained Muscle

In 2007 I was my heaviest, weighing in at 180 lbs. I felt fat, bloated, and tired. I wanted to get fit, which at the time meant gaining muscle mass. I had been told by the local gym rats that in order to lose fat but retain and gain muscle, it was essential that I consume massive amounts of protein. They recommended 1 gram of protein per pound of desired weight. I set a goal to become a gorilla with massive muscles and very low body fat. My ideal at the time was to drop the fat and build muscle by retaining 180 lbs on my 5’8″ frame.

I started going to the gym 5 or 6 days a week. I used free weights and machines, rotating legs, chest, and back. I also ran for 20 minutes on the treadmill. That first day I consumed 180 grams of protein and continued to do so for the next few months. My primary source of protein was coming from dairy, eggs, sardines, and chicken.

After a few months I noticed some nice gains on my physical form. However, I was exhausted, sluggish, bloated, and constipated. I smelled bad, my scalp was dry and itchy, and my skin was oily and blemished.

In addition to a high protein diet I continued to drink alcohol and caffeine daily. I had also began to add concentrated whey protein, creatine, and stimulant-based supplements into my diet. All of these dietary choices were, quite frankly, killing me! I was pushing my organs to their limit. I was tired, haggard, unmotivated, and depressed. Needless to say, this abusive regimen didn’t last long.

It wasn’t until a couple years later that I discovered a fruit-based, whole-foods diet, which changed my life. I have been eating a low-protein, low-fat, high carbohydrate, fruit-based, whole-foods, primarily raw diet for over 2.5 years now. I look and feel great! Initially I lost weight and then gradually gained it back in muscle. I am now very happy at around 165 lbs. The best part is that I am continuing to see gains! My skin is smooth. My sleep is regulated. My energy levels are through the roof. Most importantly, I am a happy person full of love and joy.
